A well-executed professional website presents a better sense of who you are as a person–set within a broader view of your work–than what little appears on a résumé.

For some fields, a professional website is absolutely essential for showcasing your work and letting potential superiors and team members interact with it.

Who, me?

You may have the impression that a professional website is essential for those in creative or technical fields – designers, artists, marketing campaign directors, front-end developers, etc.

But there are many others who should probably have a professional website

  • Anyone with a long list of professional accomplishments
  • Anyone with a certain level of experience and achievement, and
  • Absolutely anyone seeking a leadership position

You may be working through a career transition and wondering how to effectively communicate and connect the accomplishments in one field to the needs and priorities of another.

Good news: Those are the job of your résumé, cover letter, and other application materials (not your website).

Tell your story

A professional website tells your work story and communicates your professional identity and value in brief, and at a high level. It may also offer a few avenues for exploration.

These might include

  • Special projects you led or are leading
  • Awards and recognition
  • Funding won
  • Media appearances and interviews
  • Testimonials or comments from collaborators

Sure, I can slap something together and post it up on a domain with my name on it!

Probably not the right move. A good website is best. A poorly executed one may be worse than no website at all. It does reflect on you, hopefully for better and not worse. Your site should be pleasant to use — well-designed, well-organized, and easy to navigate and read.
